This week crews have been hard at work completing the first of three deep foundations for the bridge. Activity this week has included installation of a massive steel reinforcing cage (photo above shows one of two cage segments that were connected and dropped into the 110-foot deep, 11-foot diameter hole on Tuesday and Wednesday). This impressive steel cage weighs 75 tons (a 300 ton crane was summoned for the job). Tonight, 45 concrete trucks will be ready to pour 400 cubic yards of concrete, setting the foundation for the first “iconic” column.
