Bartlett’s impact

Bartlett served mayor from 1988 to 2001. He was first elected to council in 1974, as the first African-American council member, and hit the ground running with ideas to redevelop the city. An advocate for adequate public transportation, Bartlett championed the Gold Line Foothill Extension Project, which became operational March 5, 2016.

Bartlett is “one of the reasons Foothill Transit was established for the San Gabriel Valley,” Craig Jimenez, community development director for Monrovia, said.

Bartlett’s original focus was creating better infrastructure for buses, which laid the groundwork for the Gold Line, Jimenez said.
