As light rail expands east into the San Gabriel Valley, cities along the route are investing millions of dollars to transform nearby neighborhoods into urban hubs.

The 11.5-mile Foothill Gold Line extension will begin service on Saturday with six stops through the cities of Arcadia, Monrovia, Duarte, Irwindale and Azusa.

The historic, industrial corridor — once used by citrus and other local industries to ship their freight by rail across the country — is going through a “renaissance” as it transitions into a commuter region.

Foothill Construction Authority CEO Habib Balian said for every dollar invested in transit, cities get back four in economic growth.
